Quando i due fratelli Elric vedono morire la loro mamma, decidono di dedicarsi allo studio dell’alchimia e con questa riportarla in vita. Il tentativo però finisce in tragedia: Edward, il maggiore, perde una gamba, mentre Alphonse addirittura l’intero corpo. Ed riesce però a legare l’anima di suo fratello a un’armatura, sacrificando per questo il suo braccio destro. Dopo che gli arti mancanti di Edward sono stati ricostruiti con delle protesi di metallo, i due fratelli iniziano un viaggio che li porterà alla ricerca della Pietra Filosofale, un oggetto mitico che si dice possa rendere possibile qualsiasi cosa, anche ridare un corpo a Al e restituire braccio e gamba a Ed. Una lunga avventura che porterà i due fratelli a scoprire delle sconvolgenti verità sul mondo in cui vivono, ma anche sul loro passato.
