La storia è ambientata nei primi anni 80 del XX secolo[1]. Sandybell Christie è una ragazzina di circa dodici anni, che vive in un villaggio della Scozia. Sua madre è morta quando lei era molto piccola e da allora vive con il padre Lesley, il maestro di scuola del paese. La ragazza passa la sua vita tra la scuola ed il gioco, circondata da tanti bambini suoi amici, che vedono in lei una sorella maggiore e una piccola mamma...
