Due studentesse Madoka Kaname e Sayaka Miki, sono avvicinate da uno strano essere di nome Kyubey, questi offre loro di diventare delle giovani maghe... ma Homura Akemi, un loro compagna di scuola, cercherà in tutti i modi di impedire loro di sottoscrivere un tale contratto. In questo mondo nascosti ai più esistono creature che possiedono il potere di concedere un desiderio a una ragazza da loro prescelta. Tuttavia quest'ultima per poterlo esprimere deve scegliere di sottoscrivere un contratto e diventare così una maga. Il loro scopo è di lottare contro le streghe, creature malvagie nate da maledizioni, responsabili di omicidi, suicidi ed ogni genere di crudeltà.
