Nel
1925 a Mosca si stanno svolgendo le ultime prove del dramma "Ponzio
Pilato" di Nicolaj Maksudov. Spaventato da alcune frasi contenute nel
testo, secondo le quali ogni potere è contro la libertà, il direttore
del teatro ricorre al presidente dell'Associazione scrittori proletari
per bloccare lo spettacolo. Nella storia fa capolino Satana nei panni di
Woland maestro di magia nera, assistito da Azazillo e Koroviev. Neppure
il diavolo però riesce a impedire la sospensione dell'allestimento.
