Sophie Malaterre, una giovane disegnatrice canadese, si ritrova alla ricerca di lavoro quando, in prossimità dell'avvicinarsi dell'estate, viene informata da un'amica dell'esistenza di un sito internet grazie al quale è possibile scambiare per un periodo di tempo la propria abitazione con quella di uno sconosciuto dall'altra parte del mondo. Incuriosita e desiderosa di poter in questo modo dare una svolta alla sua esistenza, riesce a scambiare casa con Bénédicte Serteaux, una parigina che vive all'ombra della Tour Effeil, e parte per la Francia. Dopo una giornata da sogno, Sophie viene svegliata dall'irrompere della polizia: nella stanza accanto alla sua è stato ritrovato un cadavere e le impronte sull'arma sono quelle di Bénédicte. Sophie prova inutilmente a ribattere che lei non è Bénédicte e a spiegare come è arrivata fin lì ma nessuno sembra disposto a crederle, tanto più che della sua vera identità e del sito internet non sembra essere rimasta più traccia.
