Il film inizia nei secoli a.C. con un'esplosione all'orizzonte e la creazione di un enorme megatsunami sull'Oceano Atlantico, in procinto di sommergere la città di Atlantide (Atlantis come impero), città molto avanzata per quel tempo con elettricità moderna da parte degli dei greci; alcuni automi di pietra proteggono il centro della città con un campo di forza alimentato dal cosiddetto Cuore di Atlantide, un cristallo dotato di propria volontà che ha il potere di difendere la città e di far vivere a lungo la gente. Per i servizi prestati, il cristallo pretende un tributo: un membro della casa reale di Atlantide, in questo caso la regina.
