Ventotto anni prima Val (Al Pacino), rispettabile mafioso, ha rifiutato di fare la spia e tradire i suoi amici. Dopo aver finito di scontare la pena detentiva, esce dal carcere e si ricongiunge con l'ex socio e miglior amico Doc (Christopher Walken). In cerca di divertimento, emozioni e qualche guaio, i due decidono di mettersi sulle tracce di Hirsch (Alan Arkin), l'altro ex compagno del gruppo. Ad insaputa di Val, però, c'è una taglia sulla sua testa e la prima notte di libertà potrebbe essere anche l'ultima della sua vita quando Doc è chiamato a fare una scelta tra i legami di amicizia e la salvezza per se stesso.
