Dopo anni di lavoro in un laboratorio segreto alcuni scienziati hanno messo a punto Proteus IV, un computer sofisticatissimo, capace di autoprogrammarsi e che evidenzia comportamenti umani. Proteus ben presto mostra di essere assillato dall'idea della procreazione e a farne le spese è Susan, moglie del programmatore del computer. Non senza fatica Proteus viene disattivato, ma intanto Susan aspetta un bambino.
