Decisa a sfatare questa leggenda la donna si reca a Chicago in compagnia della sua assistente. Le due si ritrovano nella zona malfamata di Cabrini Green in uno stabile fatiscente abitato da neri in miseria. È proprio in questo quartiere che un geniale ritrattista negro si era innamorato, un secolo prima, della giovane donna che stava ritraendo.
