Quando Cam Brady (Will Ferrell), membro del Congresso da parecchi anni, commette un imperdonabile errore prima di un'imminente elezione uscendone con l'immagine offuscata, i fratelli Glenn (John Lithgow) e Wade Motch (Dan Aykroyd), importanti e ricchi manager del North Carolina, decidono di intervenire e garantirsi il controllo politico della zona. Mossi da tali intenti, come rivale di Brady scelgono di candidare Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), direttore alquanto naif del centro locale per il turismo. In un primo momento, la scelta di Huggins sembra la più improbabile ma con il passare dei giorni l'aiuto dei sostenitori e le sue conoscenze familiari lo trasformano nel più combattivo dei rivali.
