Rimasto orfano Metello trova lavoro come muratore nel cantiere di un ex operaio diventato ingegnere che, dimentico delle sue origini, è diventato uno sfruttatore senza scrupoli. Arrestato per essersi scontrato con la forza pubblica, mandata a proibire una manifestazione in seguito alla morte di un muratore anarchico, all'uscita dal carcere trova ad aspettarlo Ersilia, la figlia dell'ingegnere. Nel frattempo a Firenze si è fatto strada l'ideale socialista e Metello, abbandonati gli anarchici, partecipa a una manifestazione per ottenere salari più decorosi.
