Anno 1960. Per tredici studenti dell'Ocean Academy (una scuola di vela) inizia la parte più difficile del corso. In compagnia dell'enigmatico skipper Christopher Sheldon, i ragazzi dovranno passare un anno intero in mare, veleggiando tra i Caraibi e il Pacifico meridionale. Un'esperienza molto dura, funestata da un terribile incidente: durante una tempesta marina, la nave affonda causando la morte di quattro studenti e i due membri dell'equipaggio. I sopravvissuti dovranno affrontare un delicato problema: il naufragio è stato causato dall'imperizia del comandante? Un vero e proprio processo interno al gruppo dovrà dirimere il problema.
