Joan Wilder (Turner), timida scrittrice di romanzi sentimentali, viene avvertita che la sorella è stata sequestrata in Colombia dove si era recata per cercare il marito scomparso e che proprio a lei ha spedito una mappa che permette di trovare una preziosa pietra verde. La ragazza decide di partire per la Colombia dove ha in mente di scambiare la mappa con la libertà dei parenti. Arrivata a Cartagena, viene però perseguitata, oltre dai due scombinati rapitori, anche da un pericoloso spacciatore di droga che ha intuito l'esistenza della mappa...
