Il colonnello nordista Marlowe parte per infiltrarsi nel territorio nemico e sabotare i rifornimenti dei Confederati. Al suo seguito c'è Kendall, un ufficiale medico. Si capisce subito che i due si detestano. A loro a un certo punto sono costretti ad aggregare una donna, che dopo averli ospitati è stata sorpresa a spiarli. Durante il viaggio si scopre il perché dell'odio di Marlowe per i medici: hanno causato, per imperizia, la morte di sua moglie. Intanto non solo Kendall conquista la stima dell' ufficiale, ma anche la donna. Ford militare purissimo, meno malinconico e profondo di altri, ma con scene magistrali (la partenza del soldati-bambini)
