Berlino, 1942. Hilde, timida e poco appariscente segretaria in uno studio medico, si integra gradualmente nel gruppo eterogeneo di uomini e donne che, in seguito, verrà ribattezzato dai nazisti come Orchestra rossa. Hilde si innamora, sboccia come persona e, nonostante il costante pericolo, riesce a essere felice per un'intera estate. Quindi viene arrestata dalla Gestapo insieme a tutti gli altri con l'accusa di essere una spia sovietica. Partorisce il figlio nel carcere femminile di Barnimstrasse e riesce a vedere il compagno, Hans Coppi, solo un'ultima volta prima che venga giustiziato. Hilde sviluppa una resilienza inaspettata, si prende del figlio finché può e mantiene vivo il ricordo dell'amato marito.
