A Nome, in Alaska, nel 1900, Sam McCord (Wayne) e i fratelli George e Billy Pratt (Granger e Fabian) hanno scoperto per caso una vena aurifera. Sam ritorna a Seattle per cercare la fidanzata di George, ma questa, stanca di aspettare, si è nel frattempo sposata. Per non tornare a mani vuote, accompagna allora in Alaska come "sostituta" Michelle (Capucine), una graziosissima "entraîneuse" che, però, è innamorata di lui. A tutto questo si aggiunge anche una complicazione: un affarista disonesto (Kovacs) riesce a far sequestrare la miniera.
