Un uomo che versa in disperate condizioni finanziarie decide di inscenare il rapimento della moglie, per ottenere un cospicuo riscatto dal ricco suocero. Deve però impiegare i servizi di un paio di sgherri che si riveleranno non molto affidabili: finiranno per spargere del sangue molto presto e a lasciare tracce che non sfuggiranno alla brillante poliziotta Marge Gunderson, incinta di otto mesi ma dal fiuto indiscutibile.
