In un campo inglese, nel 1942, un gruppo di aviatori americani organizza i primi bombardamenti aerei in pieno giorno contro il territorio tedesco. Ma il loro comandante, dopo aver creato dal nulla un'unità combattente restituendo a tutti un amor proprio dimenticato, crolla per la tensione. Ottimo film americano di guerra con scene di combattimenti aerei che non restano fini a stesse: al regista interessa soprattutto lo stress fisico e psichico al quale sono sottoposti i responsabili, e il confronto tra morali diverse messe in crisi. Il regista King aveva una vasta esperienza di aviazione, Gregory Peck nel ruolo dell'ufficiale con l'esaurimento nervoso è perfetto.
