La storia è quella di Robin di Locksley (Russell Crowe) nobile ed abile arciere al servizio di Re Riccardo Cuor di Leone durante la guerra di Francia. Interessato solo alla gloria e a "salvarsi la pelle", Locksley cambia prospettive dopo la morte del sovrano: tornando a casa, in Inghilterra, scopre in che condizioni versa la contea di Nottingham, vessata da un dispotico sceriffo, ed incontra la vedova lady Marian (Cate Blanchett), estremamente scettica sulle reali intenzioni dell’uomo. Nel tentativo di guadagnare la fiducia della donna di cui è ormai innamorato, e nel tentativo di salvare la sua terra, l’arciere fugge nella foresta di Sherwood e mette insieme una banda di fuorilegge che lo aiuti contro lo sceriffo tiranno ed il nuovo sovrano, Giovanni. Robin di Locksley, lascia così il posto a Robin Hood...
