In un tetro castello vive l'aristocratica famiglia Menliff: il vecchio conte, il figlio Cristiano con la giovane moglie Nevenka e la nipote Katia oltre la governante e un vecchio servitore. Il ritorno al maniero dell'altro figlio del conte, Kurt, a suo tempo scacciato e diseredato per le sue scelleratezze, risveglia in Nevenka la passione per l'amante di un tempo. Kurt viene pugnalato alla gola. Il suo spirito comincia ad ossessionare Nevenka che crede di ricevere ancora le sue visite notturne e le sue torture. Poco dopo anche il vecchio conte viene ucciso. Il terrore regna al castello fin quando non si scopre il vero colpevole che in un momento di esaltazione si uccide.
