Prima che divampasse la guerra in Jugoslavia, Daniel e Ajla si sono amati. Con lo scoppio del conflitto, invece, si ritrovano su fronti opposti, sono nemici: lui è un soldato serbo mentre lei è una prigioniera bosniaca, tenuta rinchiusa nello stesso campo in cui Daniel si ritrova a far da guardia. Dei tempi del loro amore sembra passato un secolo e il violento scontro etnico generatosi ha rubato loro anche il futuro. Messi nuovamente uno di fronte all'altra, non possono però dimenticare quello che hanno vissuto e il loro rapporto si evolve, diventa più complesso e incerto, schiacciato dal peso terribile che la guerra addossa sulla gente comune come loro.
