L'ultraconservatrice e profondamente devota Margareth White (Julianne Moore) vive nel tranquillo sobborgo di Chamberlain, nello stato del Maine, insieme alla figlia Grace (Chloë Grace Moretz), una ragazzina mite ed educata tenuta al riparo dalla madre dai pericoli della società circostante. L'insegnante di educazione fisica Miss Dejardin (Judy Greer) prova invano a proteggere Grace dagli attacchi delle compagne di scuola che, guidate dalla popolare Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday), non perdono occasione per schernirla e umiliarla.
