Tony Stark, un magnate playboy le cui industrie producono armamenti per il governo americano, viene ferito e catturato dai nemici degli USA durante un test sul campo in cui si stanno provando alcune nuove armi. I rapitori vorrebbero costringerlo a produrre armi per loro, ma lui riesce invece a realizzare per sé un'armatura speciale grazie alla quale riesce a fuggire. Tornato a casa decide di non dismettere quell'armatura, ma anzi di potenziarla e di trasformarsi così in Iron Man, un nuovo supereroe nemico del crimine.
