Celie è una ragazzina di quattordici anni che a seguito delle violenze subite da parte del padre dà alla luce due bambini, un maschio e una femmina, che le vengono brutalmente strappati. Allontanati i figli da sua figlia il padre decide di vendere Celie ad un vedovo con figli di nome Albert che la sposa, abusa di lei e la fa vivere come una schiava. In seguito ad Albert viene venduta anche Nettie, la sorella minore di Celie, nonché l'unica persona al mondo da cui Celie si senta amata e che ama profondamente.Nettie insegna a Celie a leggere e a scrivere, ma è insospettita da certi atteggiamenti di Albert: questi infatti desidera abusare anche di lei. Un giorno Albert decide di mettere in atto le sue fantasie, ma Nettie si ribella e di conseguenza viene scacciata dalla casa e dalla terra dell'uomo, con immenso dolore delle due sorelle. Andandosene, Nettie ripete con veemenza e più volte alla sorella che le avrebbe scritto e che solo la morte avrebbe potuto impedirglielo.
