È la domanda che si pone Andrew Dominik, regista e sceneggiatore di Blonde, che è basato sul romanzo omonimo di Joyce Carol Oates, sempre definito dalla sua autrice come fiction invece che biografia. Anche Dominik crea un racconto di (semi)invenzione che non nomina nessuno dei coprotagonisti della storia di Marilyn, come gli ex mariti Joe DiMaggio e Arthur Miller o il presunto amante John F. Kennedy. Per contro la diva ha un vero nome e cognome, anzi due: quello con cui è nata, e quello con cui ha dato luce alla nuova sé, facendone un'icona mondiale.
