Judas Priest è una pioniera della band britannica Heavy Metal ed è stata un precursore del movimento "New Wave of British Heavy Metal", gettando le basi per la velocità e il thrash metal degli anni '80 e '90 con numerosi album classici.

La band si è formata a Birmingham, in Inghilterra, nel 1969 dal chitarrista John Perry (che morì poco dopo e fu sostituito da Earnest Chataway), il bassista Bruno Stapenhill, il batterista John Partridge e il cantante Alan Atkins, che crearono un nome di gruppo dalla canzone di Bob Dylan ' La ballata di Frankie Lee e Judas Priest '. Nel 1970 si unirono il chitarrista Kenneth K. K. Downing e il bassista Ian Hill (2), in sostituzione di Chataway e Stapenhill. I batteristi John Ellis e Chris Campbell hanno sostituito Partridge. Più tardi, nel 1972, Rob Halford e il batterista John Hinch si unirono per sostituire rispettivamente Atkins e Campbell. Un secondo chitarrista, Glenn Tipton, fu anche aggiunto alla formazione nel 1974 come compenso per il suggerimento della sua casa discografica (Gull Records) di aggiungere una sezione di corno al primo album, Rocka Rolla.

La band con Halford, Downing, Tipton e Hill avrebbe continuato a registrare 14 album dal 1974 al 1990. I Priest passarono attraverso un numero considerevole di batteristi (Hinch, Alan Moore, Simon Phillips e Les Binks) tra la sua formazione e il 1980 quando Trapeze il batterista Dave Holland si unì e rimase fino al 1988, Ram It Down. All'inizio del 1990 il batterista dei Racer X Scott Travis si unì alla band e la registrazione iniziò nel suo album dei Painkiller. A metà del 1990 la band fu portata in tribunale per il tentato suicidio di due giovani ragazzi a Reno, presumibilmente guidati da messaggi subliminali sul suo album dei Stained Class. Il caso fu infine espulso dal tribunale e nel settembre 1990, Painkiller fu rilasciato.
