I Metallica si sono formati nel 1981 dal cantante / chitarrista James Hetfield e dal batterista Lars Ulrich. Il duo si è incontrato per la prima volta attraverso un annuncio in un giornale musicale di Los Angeles. A quel tempo, Ulrich aveva poca esperienza musicale e nessuna band, ma riuscì a garantire uno slot in un prossimo disco della compilation chiamato "Metal Massacre".
