2 ans et demi après son intégrale Ravel acclamée par la critique, le brillant pianiste Bertrand Chamayou revient avec un nouvel album consacré aux deux plus célèbres concertos de Camille Saint-Saëns. En complément de ces deux chefs d'œuvre, Bertrand Chamayou a enregistré plusieurs pièces pour piano seul (Etudes, Mazurka, Valse.), qui nous ramènent dans le décor et l'atmosphère feutrés des salons parisiens. Composés par Camille Saint-Saëns à 30 ans d'intervalle, l'héroïque deuxième concerto et l'exotique cinquième (surnommé " l'Egyptien ") révèlent derrière leur virtuosité et leur brillante facture un monde envoûtant et débordant d'imagination. Salué comme " le nouveau Prince du piano français " (Diapason), Bertrand Chamayou est accompagné ici par l'Orchestre National de France dirigé par le maestro Emmanuel Krivine pour un album qui promet champagne et feux d'artifices - ainsi que quelques bouffés d'opium !

This is yet another outstanding disc by Chamayou. It was recorded in 2017-8 and stands out from the crowd in the additional sense that it contains seven solo pieces for piano by Saint Saens. They act as a generous and informative set of encores. These are all worth getting to know and are nicely varied in content while being typically lyrical in nature.

The concertos are both played and recorded to the highest standard with a real sense of performance spontaneity. Collectors may well find them preferable to the otherwise fine Thibaudet coupling of the concertos in those ways. Thibaudet offers the Franck Symphonic Variations as his encore which may be a decider for some.

One should not overlook the excellent Collard 'twofer' of the complete five concertos either which has been vastly improved in the current 1999 remastering. All previous sonic reservations have been addressed and the set makes for an enjoyable and exciting experience. Previn, as conductor, was in his element with this, often extrovert, music.

Chamayou now has a number of truly outstanding discs to his credit. Of especial note, beyond this particular issue, would be the Liszt Transcendental Etudes, the Liszt Piano Concerto 1 (on period piano) and a fine double disc set of the complete Ravel solo piano works. He is a pianist for collectors to watch out for!

This disc offers an attractive combination of fine performances, fine recordings and intriguing encores.
