In Petshop of Horrors facciamo la conoscenza del misterioso Conte D, l'effeminato gestore di un negozio di animali di Chinatown molto particolare. Nel suo negozio si possono trovare bestie rare ed esotiche, oppure esseri molto ma molto più particolari: animali magici, in grado di realizzare i sogni delle persone. In cambio, oltre ad una cospicua dose di denaro, vi sono alcune regole da rispettare; la principale è di non mostrare mai ad anima viva tale creatura, pena l'annullamento del contratto e la caduta di ogni responsabilità del negozio per eventuali problemi causati dalla creatura. Petshop of Horrors è un onirico viaggio nei meandri più oscuri e malati della mente umana, e ci parla delle sue devianze, delle sue illusioni e delle sue debolezze.
