Durante la II Guerra Mondiale, il colonnello inglese Nicholson, che si trova con il suo reggimento in Birmania, obbedendo ad un ordine superiore, s'arrende coi suoi uomini ai giapponesi, e viene inviato con i suoi in un campo di prigionieri sperduto nella giungla, comandato dal colonnello Saito. Costui, avendo avuto l'ordine di far costruire, entro un limite di tempo stabilito, un ponte sul fiume Kwai, vorrebbe adibire ai lavori manuali non soltanto i soldati inglesi prigionieri, ma anche gli ufficiali. A ciò si oppone Nicholson e tra i due colonnelli scoppia un conflitto, durante il quale il giapponese ricorre ad inumane misure di coercizione nel tentativo d'indurre Nicholson a cedere.
