Il mancato fidanzamento fra il ricco Paul e l'estrosa intellettuale Helen provoca la rottura dei rapporti fra le due famiglie. Il giovane e squattrinato Leonard fa la conoscenza di Helen e di sua sorella maggiore, Margaret.
