Alex Ramsey, insieme al padre sta viaggiando sul 'Drake'. Il ragazzino, avendo notato che sulla nave viaggia anche un magnifico stallone nero e selvaggio, gli si avvicina e gli offre dell zucchero. Poi la nave naufraga. Nei concitati attimi del naufragio Alex riesce a liberare Black e insieme a lui finisce su un'isola deserta. Tempo dopo, recuperato da alcuni pescatori, Alex, con il suo cavallo, tornano a casa. Ma 'Black', in città, è sempre più nervoso.
