A sei anni, Baby Jane Hudson era una bravissima attrice. Una volta cresciuta, Jane non è più la bambina prodigio di un tempo, mentre sua sorella Blanche, invece, ha raggiunto le alte vette della popolarità nel campo cinematografico. Jane tenta di emulare la sorella, ma i suoi film sono scadenti. Al culmine della carriera però Blanche resta paralizzata per un incidente d'auto. Jane e Blanche vivono sole, e Jane si prende cura della sorella invalida. Venuta a conoscenza del desiderio di Blanche di vendere la casa, Jane comincia a sottoporla ad ogni sorta di angherie.
