Bernard è uno scrittore che torna in un albergo per rivedere Tilde, la cameriera di cui si era invaghito. Gli dicono che si è suicidata, ma a poco a poco si rende conto che qualcuno l'ha uccisa. Bernard sospetta inizialmente di Enrico, il proprietario dell'albergo e di suo figlio Mario, presunti amanti di Tilde. Alla fine, però, riceve una confessione decisiva da Irma, sorella di Mario. Ma è la verità? Da un romanzo di Giovanni Comisso, un film che privilegia alle tipiche soluzioni dei gialli un'atmosfera onirica legata al fatto che il protagonista è uno scrittore e che le sue indagini muovono da congetture immaginose.
