Dopo aver giocato per molti anni tra le fila degli Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) diviene il general manager della squadra di baseball che al momento langue economicamente. Intenzionato al raggiungere il miglior risultato con la minor spesa possibile, l’uomo elabora un rivoluzionario metodo per scegliere i giocatori da acquistare e inserire nella rosa da schierare in campo. Attraverso il ricorso a modelli matematici e statistici e l’aiuto di Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), Billy in poco tempo rivoluzionerà il modo del baseball, nonostante la diffidenza di chi lo ha preceduto e il timore di chi lo circonda.
