In un 1985 alternativo, dove i supereroi sono da tempo parte integrante del tessuto sociale e la tensione tra gli Stati Uniti e l'Unione Sovietica è altissima, un vecchio ma determinato vigilante mascherato, Rorschach, cerca di scoprire chi ha ucciso uno dei suoi primi colleghi. Nel farlo svela un complotto teso a screditare ed uccidere tutti i supereroi passati e presenti. Riunita la sua vecchia squadra, formata da un gruppo di vecchi supereroi a riposo, di cui solo uno è in possesso di veri poteri speciali, Rorschach scoprirà un'inquietante cospirazione legata al suo passato e quello dei suoi amici.
