Sapendo che per loro, qualora scoperti, non vi sarà via di scampo alla morte, la Cia invia sul posto lo specialista Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), che ha un piano incredibile, ma molto rischioso, per cercare di portarli sani e salvi fuori dall'Iran.
